Digging

 

This is a project of investigation into the Irish bogland through the medium of family memory and personal history. Using the starting point of some old family photographs, one of which shows my grandfather digging in the bog, I explore the landscape and its residues through multi-media processes, which lead ultimately to painting. The work reflects the transformation of the bog from a once-living environment to a relic of the past, a tangle of memory, environment, and heritage as I piece together my family's connection to this disappearing landscape.
